Air springs for source isolation are not essential

Stanz-Schmidt was looking for a cost-effective solution to reduce vibration transmission into the building from an ebu H125FRiV press operating at 120 strokes per minute.

How can the vibration transmission from the press be reduced?

The installation conditions were challenging: the press was standing on just 15 cm of screed with a layer of gravel underneath. Effective source isolation was therefore particularly important. An alternative option under consideration was a complex mounting system using air springs and a large steel plate. Instead, isoloc developed a compact solution using UMS6-ASF press mounting systems and HD3 vibration isolation packages. The key factor here was the design, which was tailored to the actual excitation frequencies. A significantly lower tuning frequency would have increased the structural complexity and costs without effectively isolating the main excitation frequency of 2 Hz.

What solution was implemented?

UMS6-ASF machine feet with an HD3 vibration isolation package, measuring 250 × 250 × 139 mm, were used. This solution enabled simple installation, precise levelling of the press and a stable machine base.

Previously, air springs had been fitted in conjunction with a large steel plate to isolate such presses from vibration, which is a very labour-intensive and expensive process. The customer was convinced that such fine-tuning was not necessary, as the main excitation frequency fe = 2 Hz (= 120 strokes/min) cannot be isolated even by air springs.

What was achieved by using press-fit bearings?

Vibration transmission into the building was significantly reduced. At the same time, the project costs at the time – 1,328 euros – were considerably lower than the alternative air spring solution, which was quoted at 11,000 euros.

In addition to the vibration isolation, the customer was particularly impressed by the ease of installation, the good levelling capabilities and the stable machine base.
