The finite element method (FEM) is the most widely used method today for calculating complex structures in mechanical and apparatus engineering, construction, automotive and aerospace engineering.

A finite element calculation provides results that can be used to assess serviceability and optimize components. Furthermore, FEM is able to carry out simulations with linear and non-linear material behavior.

isoloc uses FEM in particular for strength calculations. We also use the method to develop and validate new products. For larger calculation tasks, we work together with partners.

Advantages of an FEM

What is the purpose of a finite element calculation?

The implementation of an FEM has three main objectives:

  • Predicting the static and dynamic behavior of planned systems
  • Reproduction of events that have occurred (e.g. vibration velocity vi at a component point A)
  • Identification of system parameters (e.g. stiffness K, damping q, etc.)

What are the advantages of a finite element calculation?

Which parameters can be calculated with FEM?

A finite element calculation can be used to calculate the following parameters for the design of a remedial measure:

  • Load-bearing capacity of an object
  • Static deformations due to self-weight
  • natural modes
  • natural frequencies
  • dynamic stresses
  • Vibration movements
  • Strength tests / calculation of stresses Simulation of the system behavior at a certain excitation
  • Integration into a CAD-supported design process

In addition, such an analysis can be used to identify design weaknesses in a machine or structure. This is particularly advantageous in the planning or design phase of machines, systems or structures.

Where is the finite element calculation used?

In principle, the finite element method can be used wherever physical phenomena can be described by partial, location- or time-dependent differential equations. The FEM and its programs enable a wide range of simulations.
